Radical Face

Why? - Alopecia Review written by Naked Radio host Colin Miller

Band creates accessible music for a diverse audience

By Colin Miller
Guest Reviewer

Why should you care about Why? My initial response to this would be that listening to its new record could change your life drastically, but that would be a gross understatement. Why? has all the pop-playability of the most popular songs on the radio. When it comes to lyrics, “Alopecia” has far more emotionally penetrating verses than whatever fill-in-the-blank-slowdance-song people will play at their weddings.

With lyrics more intelligent and more poetic than almost anything you’ll hear put to music, Why? creates amazingly original music. Why? appeals to common experiences as if they were pop culture references: the reference is universal yet infiltrates into deeply personal experiences. This talented group has the equal capacity to shape the sound of any band still making music, to be played at your party this Friday and to be the study of any professor from the English or philosophy department.

Yoni Wolf, his brother Josiah, and Doug McDiarmid make up the talented Why? trio. “Yoni writes and sings mainly, but he’s also known to dance, play any instrument he can get his hands on (piano, keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, harmonica), sample and occasionally beat his chest like a gorilla,” according to http://www.anticon.com. “Doug (or “Death Metal Doug,” as the others prefer) is the utility man, maneuvering such heavy machinery as pianos, guitars, samplers and turntables,” according to the Web site. “Josiah plays drums, teaches drums to little kids, eats drums for breakfast and sleeps drums at night. Driven by brotherly competition, he also plays anything that Yoni plays.”

Yoni Wolf started the band as a solo effort named after his alias from group recordings in Greenthink and Clouddead. Wolf went on to start a label, Anticon, with fellow Clouddead member, Tim “Sole” Holland and a few other musicians. The members of Anticon have not won a spot on American Idol for a chance to record music. Instead, they started recording music on their own and pay their own paychecks now.

Wolf has been performing and recording for a decade, any fame or notoriety that he has gained over the years is because of personal ingenuity and ability. It doesn’t hurt that he surrounded himself with other highly talented and influential musicians. Why? has shared the stage with such notable acts as Yo la Tengo, The Islands and Fog.

“Alopecia” offers everything listed above in the way of intriguing lyrics, romantic notions, abstract narratives and creative music, but the standout feature of this album is the continuation of the popification of Wolf’s sound which started sometime after his first solo EP. Accessibility to the average listener made a huge leap from 2003’s “Oaklandazulasylum” and ’05’s “Elephant Eyelash” and with “Alopecia” Why? has taken this trend further.

Although many critics would instantly say an artist is selling out to the public’s will, this isn’t the case. A close listen to Why?’s work over the years uncovers musical and lyrical themes and motifs similar to those on “Alopecia.” The album sports a new rhythm and meter to the lyrics than is typical of Why?’s previous releases. “The Hollows,” the album’s first single, is a perfect example. The tracks “Good Friday” and “By Torpedo or Crohn’s” showcase Wolf’s penchant for rapping, where tracks like “Fatalist Palmistry” show a complete competence for creating upbeat pop nuggets. Also, “These Few Presidents” flexes Why?’s metaphor morphing muscles in ways that would make Wolf’s high school English teacher cry tears of joy.

Visit Why?’s Web site http://www.myspace.com/whyanticon.

Alopecia is the technical term for hair loss, according to http://www.dictionary.com.

The members of the band are not bald, so I do not know why they choose to give the album this title.

The verdict:

My best explanation is that the album deals with the intricacies and stresses of everyday life, leading to an outcome such as “Alopecia.” Miss it? Why?

Gentleman Auction House

As many of you may already know, Gentleman Auction House will be here in Stillwater on March 10 to perform at Third Place with Bald Eagle, Witch's Hat, and Billy Schuh. GAH is a band from St. Louis, MO and will be releaseing a new EP entitled Book of Matches which will be sold exclusively on all of their tour dates. They have not been around very long and already they are releasing their EP and new full-length record on Emergency Umbrella Records and have been awarded "Best Local Act Gone National" from the Riverfront Times in 2007, and have also been described as a cross between the Omaha, NB Saddle Creek scene and The Elephant 6 Collective. If you like bands like Of Montreal, the Decemberists, recent Bright Eyes, and The White Rabbits you'll fall in love at first listen. Book of Matches will be their second release. Their first, The Rules Were Handed Down EP, was self-released in 2006 and sold a favorable amount for an indie band.

In June Gentleman Auction House will release their first full-length record on Emergency Umbrella Records entitled Alphabet Graveyard. So far Alphabet Graveyard has recieved praise for it's brilliance and for the bands growth. "Alphabet Graveyard manages to retain the tender and emotive melodies and impeccably tasteful arrangements that have always been the most endearing components in the Gentleman Auction House sound, but new explorations of
everything from reggae-infused rhythms to jangly Motown guitar flourishes find a home on this full-length debut. The band dares to navigate these uncharted waters and manages a logical progression to a very new place where solemn folk ballads, epic mood pieces and infectiously danceable pop very naturally find themselves on common ground."

To get a hint of what to expect download the song Book of Matches

Band Spotlight with Colourmusic

So most people in Stillwater, or possibly the entire state of Oklahoma are familiar with the pop-rock band Colourmusic. The band is made up of five blokes who go by the name of Roy G. Biv. 4 of the 5 Roys are from the great state of Oklahoma and one is from across the pond; the UK. Colourmusic has been around for a few years and has built up quite a large and loyal fan base. Their live shows are different every time the play. I can gush about how awesome their shows are and how inventive the band is, but in reality I feel like you, the reader, should make up your mind. They are the musical equivalent to a bag of Skittles; something you can survive without, but once you’ve tasted the sweet nectar you will want more.

This Friday, Feb. 22 Colourmusic will be playing at Eskimo Joe’s in Stillwater. The show is the End of the World Dance Party. It’s free to everyone with a valid id stating that they are over the age of 21. All black attire is recommended, encouraged, and damn near mandatory. Roy is on the record claiming that they have been told insider information that the world will end on the last drumbeat of the evening. Basically, this is the one party you should attend. Your life may depend on it.

In a parallel universe the 5 Roys will be joining the band British Sea Power on a west coast tour followed by SXSW and a few Midwest dates. When the tour is over they will be available to tell stories, help tend your garden, and deliver you your order from Wendy’s. So if you are in Stillwater Friday, hit up their show and buy their EPs because once they are gone you will have to wait until May to pickup the Orange album consisting of the Red and Yellow EPs.

Their tour dates are:

Feb 21, 2008 - Norman, OK - Will Rogers Room OU Student Union
Feb. 22, 2008 - Stillwater, OK - Eskimo Joes

Review From the O'Colly Today

Band releases sophomore album, seeks originality

By Kevin Sears

Contributing Writer

Since the Beatles, many bands have attempted to tackle the indie-pop genre with varying degrees of success.
Many fall short of being distinct in a genre of tapped-out originality. However, Yesan Damen (pronounced Yes-on Day-men) sticks to tradition while also breaking away to show its uniqueness.

Chronos/Kairos was released domestically on Jan. 15 on Seattle, Wash, imprint, New Wine Records.
It is the band’s second release and a progression from its 2006 release, “The Never Beginning Story.” Yesan Damen has been compared to Sufjan Stevens and Belle and Sebastian in the past, but to end the list there is not right. With similarities to Beulah, Masters of the Hemisphere, Tilly and the Wall, The Rentals, Stars, Nada Surf and Midlake, Yesan Damen possesses all of the qualities that make their contemporaries good while setting themselves apart with their use of clever arrangements that are used at all the right times and places. The opening track “Whoa!” Incorporates a piano line that meanders in and out of the verse and chorus, while the next track, “Monuments To Ambition,” is a more guitar-driven pop song. “Chronos/Kairos” sticks to this method and delivers the listener a package of songs you can sing along to during the first listen. This is not a bad thing. Pop music is based on the ability to give listeners the proper tools to be able to instantly be part of it. This entire album isn’t just a collection of sugar-coated pop songs that leave you begging for more. It is an album with a pinch of experimentation in instrumentation. There are violins, flutes, cellos, horns, banjos and even a Korean drum called a Changgo mixed into the complexity of the music. Granted, those instruments might not seem impressive because of how commonly they are used in pop music. But Yesan Damen uses them to provide more depth to the arrangements and in places and spots where you will feel they are necessary. Nothing on “Chronos/Kairos” is overdone or used for the simple reason of its proximity to the musicians during the writing process. Every note seems carefully calculated and practically perfect.

“Chronos/Kairos” is a record packed with memorable songs such as “Hang on For Dear Life,” “Outer Space,” “Time Spent Elsewhere” and “Canons of Devotion.” This small three piece from Seattle, Wash., can give the massive 23-member The Polyphonic Spree, a run for its money. Yesan Damen accomplishes what takes The Polyphonic Spree an entire army to do with far less people and in less than 35 minutes. They are not perfect or geniuses. They know how to craft a simple, catchy pop record complete with all of the right hooks and enough experimentation to keep you glued to the stereo. In the over-saturated climate of indie-pop, bands with a fresh take on the genre like Yesan Damen are needed to break up the monotony.
Yesan Damen may be a small band from Washington, however, they are a band to keep an eye on in the future.
This isn’t the first or last album for them. Chronos/Kairos will be an album that people go back to several years from now while humming a melody or when they have lyrics stuck in their head. Yesan Damen is that type of band. They are timeless, talented, smart and catchy.

The verdict: “I urge you to give them a listen because I promise you’ll thank me for it later.”
4/5 stars

TIGHT PANTS SYNDROME

Tight Pants Syndrome is a pop-rock band from the mighty city on the mighty Mississippi River, St. Louis, MO. Most people might not think of St. Louis as a place where good music is coming from, but it is. It is a very strong scene and with the improvement of several clubs, college radio, and a collective of like-minded musicians St. Louis may very well become the next big city to hit it big in the indie music world.

Tight Pants Syndrome sounds similar to the Elephant 6 Collective bands like The Minders, Apples In Stereo, and Dressy Bessy. Like the E6 bands, Tight Pants Syndrome channels the pure pop power possessed by the Kinks, Rolling Stones, and early Beatles. They are fun and will make you want to dance! They have already been chosen as the Best Pop Act in St. Louis by the Riverfront Times and have an album you can only get at their shows.

They are playing a show in St. Louis on Jan. 29 at Cicero's. If you are planning on being in the area look it up!

You can download a few tracks at their Myspace page!

Polyphonic Spree "We Crawl" Music Video

Recently, as in last week, The Polyphonic Spree released a new music video for their song We Crawl from their latest album The Fragile Army. The concept was a bit unusual. The director gave the 20 plus member band a few cameras and told them to film whatever they wanted. The end result is a mixture of scenes from ordinary life. The video captures the members doing things such as bathing their child to riding their bike. Basically it sounds really uncool, but it shows that these misunderstood people are just like anyone else who do the same things day in and day out. So here it is for your enjoyment!

MOM

Each Wednesday we will feature a story on a band that very few people have heard of. They will tend to be bands from Oklahoma or bordering states. So for the first installment we are featuring Denton, Texas band, Mom.

Mom is a relatively new band and they create some of the most breathtakingly beautiful music similar to the likes of Panda Bear, Eluvium, and Album Leaf. It is not unusual for a band like Mom to emerge from Denton, TX since the University of North Texas (located in Denton) is a world renowned music school. Denton has a rich tradition for churning out great music whether it is Jazz, Rock, Alt-Country, Electronic, or Classical. With bands like The Eagles, Centro-Matic, Midlake, Tripping Daisy, Chomsky, and Fishboy all claiming Denton as there jumping off point, Mom certainly set themselves apart from the rest of the current music community.

This past summer Mom released their first proper album, Little Brite, on Dallas label, Pancakes For Mattie and has since been asked to play with Beach House and Papercuts on March 8 in Denton, open for Les Savy Fav and join the Lymbyc System tour. They were also asked by SXSW to come play without even applying. So things are looking good for the guys in Mom.

Check Mom out live:

Jan. 18 @ The Loft in the Paladium Ballroom in Dallas, TX (w/ Les Savy Fav)
Feb. 2 @ And/Or Gallery in Dallas, TX
Feb. 22 @ Lola's in Fort Worth, TX (w/ Lymbyc System & this Will Destroy You)
Feb. 23 @ Monks in Abeiline, TX
(w/ Lymbyc System & this Will Destroy You)
Mar. 8 @ Hailey's in Denton, TX (w/ Beach House and Papercuts)

Little Brite can be purchased at Good Records

Check out Mom on myspace or their record label Pancakes For Mattie!

Yo Gabba Gabba!

I am going to do my best to update this everyday or nearly daily...

So....last weekend I was introduced to famed kids show Yo! Gabba Gabba. I must say it was awesome. It's trippy and funny and has good music. Check out a clip here:

So speaking of kid related entertainment check out this video of The Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players. It is a band made up of a Mom [slides/costumes], Dad [multi-instrumentalist and lead vocals] and their Daughter [the drummer].

Sticking with the kid theme, check out Gustafer Yellowgold!

Enjoy! I'll have something fun tomorrow. Stay tuned!
